Gary Brown is the Managing Director of PCA, having founded the company in 1993 after many years’ experience as an archaeologist in the City of London. He now oversees the effective running of the company and its three offices, as well as being actively involved in project work and undertaking numerous commitments for publications in academic and popular archaeological press.

His key specialisms are the management of the company; procurement, design and implementation of archaeological and built heritage projects; client liaison and execution of fieldwork projects. Recent projects that Gary has managed include the London 2012 regeneration, for which over 100 evaluation trenches and 8 excavations were made, the 1.2 hectare excavation of Roman to post medieval remains at Tabard Square in Southwark and the 3-phase excavation of Moor House in the City of London. Gary additionally represents PCA on the committee of several archaeology-related interest groups including the Federation of Archaeological Managers and Employers and CBA London.


Peter Moore BA (Hons)

Peter Moore has worked as an archaeologist for 25 years, of which the last 15 have been based in London and the south of England. He spent 5 years as a project manager in Newham Museum Service, where he was responsible for advising the London Borough of Waltham Forest and for undertaking, major archaeological investigations at English Heritage's Tilbury Fort. He joined PCA as a Project Manager in 1996 and currently runs a wide variety of projects from negotiation through fieldwork to publication, across Southern England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Projects that Peter has managed include the Seaboard Depot Mesolithic site in Guildford, the Shadwell Roman bath complex in Tower Hamlets, Southwark Cathedral's Millennium Project, Bermondsey Abbey in Southwark and the M74 Motorway in Glasgow.


Josephine Brown BA (Cantab)

Josephine has worked in archaeology since 1986, as a field archaeologist, site supervisor and draughtsperson. She worked for 12 years at the DUA/MoLAS, where she helped develop the use of computer graphics and GIS. Since 1998 Josephine has been Manager of the PCA Graphics Department: she is also a Company Director. She is responsible for the programming and production of all PCA graphics work, including training, research and development, and quality assurance.

As well as ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget, she insists on high levels of accuracy and production standards for all types of work. She also continues to be closely involved in the production of CAD graphics at all levels. These include Evaluation Reports and DBAs; excavation Assessment Reports, Landscape Surveys and Historic Character Assessments; monographs and academic journals. Recent key projects include the London 2012 Olympics, Bermondsey Square Regeneration and Bristol Broadmead.


Frank Meddens Ph.D BA (Hons) FSA MIfA

Frank Meddens has been responsible for the management of the post-excavation aspects of Pre-Construct Archaeology's operations since 1997. He ensures that the archaeological archives when they come off site are appropriately assessed and where necessary further analysed and taken forward to publication. He is also responsible for ensuring that the finds and records are transferred to the appropriate museum services where they can be further researched or put on display. Frank is also responsible for PCA's Health & Safety and Environment practice and policy.
Frank is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, a Research Fellow at the Geography Department of Royal Holloway and the Institute of Andean Studies in Berkeley.He has published extensively on British archaeology, including papers on Bronze Age and Roman remains, Medieval and Post Medieval ceramics as well as Andean prehistory.

Tim has been an archaeologist since graduating from the University of Southampton in 1998. He started his career working as a field archaeologist in London, excavating on numerous sites around the capital including Spitalfields. He joined PCA in 2000, commencing as a field archaeologist and then progressed to Supervisor/Senior Supervisor. He took up the role of Senior Project Manager in 2004. Tim has managed many archaeological projects including the large urban excavation in Draper’s Gardens, City of London, (the monograph for which is forthcoming); Royal Clarence Dock Yards, Portsmouth; the Water Gardens, Bushy Park; Kew Palace and Kensington Palace.

Chris Mayo started as an archaeologist in 1999 on sites in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire before working as a field archaeologist in London. He joined PCA in September 1999 and commenced supervising in 2000, working on a wide variety of large-scale projects including Southwark Cathedral, The Royal Arsenal, Victoria Square in Belfast, Fort Warden on the Isle of Wight and Fulham Palace. Since 2006 he has been project managing for PCA, with roles including client advice, project initialisation, human resources and local IT support. He has a number of publications due for forthcoming release, and has co-authored a monograph on the Millennium excavations at Southwark Cathedral.


Helen Hawkins MA BA (Hons) MIfA

Helen Hawkins has worked in archaeology for nine years, the first four of which were spent as a field archaeologist and site supervisor with PCA, managing sites in London, Manchester and Darlington. Helen then joined Scott Wilson Ltd as an Archaeological Consultant, where she specialised in Environmental Statements and design of archaeological mitigation schemes, providing archaeological advice for road schemes, sewage treatment works, pipelines and large scale regeneration projects. Helen rejoined PCA in October 2007 as a project manager and is responsible for designing and managing fieldwork projects, Cultural Heritage Environmental Statements and client liaison. She has provided heritage advice to local councils, utility companies, housebuilders, housing associations and land banks amongst others.

Her recent work includes management of an Archaeological and Historic Building Mitigation Strategy for King’s Cross Central Urban Regeneration and management of the production of a Cultural Heritage Environmental Statement chapter for a Greenfield urban expansion development at Raunds, Northamptonshire.


Charlotte Matthews BA (Hons) MIfA

Charlotte Matthews has 24 years’ experience in the Heritage Sector and was a senior project manager at Wessex Archaeology before joining PCA in 2008. Head of Historic Buildings and Landscapes, she specialises in buildings archaeology, heritage assessment and conservation planning, as well as post-excavation analysis and publication. Her recent projects include management of the multi-faceted recording project for King’s Cross Central redevelopment scheme (2008-present) and production of Conservation Plans for the Block Mills at the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth (2009) She has also managed production of a number of publications including an award-winning volume on the Mary Rose (British Archaeological Awards, 2006).

Sarah commenced her career as an archaeologist in 1998. Originally a field archaeologist working mainly on sites across London and the South of England, Sarah became an archaeological consultant in 2001 for a London archaeological unit and worked on projects across the country. Sarah joined Scott Wilson Ltd as an Archaeological Consultant in 2004, providing heritage advice, inputting into EIA/Environmental Statements and successfully delivering projects for developer clients including large sites in Ipswich, Dartford and for a pipeline across Romania. Sarah joined PCA in 2008 and is responsible for business development for the company working with a broad range of clients from both the public and private sectors.

John Maloney is a highly experienced cultural heritage consultant, project director, negotiator and communicator with over 30 years of experience in the field of archaeology & cultural heritage. From the mid-1970s he worked for the Museum of London for nearly 20 years, latterly leading the archaeological operations in the City of London where he was involved with many major development projects. In 1989 “John was made a Freeman of the City of London for his services to the archaeology of the City of London”. In 1992, John left the Museum of London and established Archaeological Aspects, a heritage consultancy. He then sold this business to AOC Archaeology which he joined as a founding director of its English operations, latterly becoming deputy MD.  John worked for English Heritage (2001-2005) as Assistant Project Director (Stonehenge New Visitor Centre Project) and at the end of that project joined Halcrow Engineering Group (2005 – May 2009) as Principal & Team Leader, Archaeology & Cultural Heritage.

Jon Butler BA (Hons) Oxon

Jon Butler has over 23 years experience as an archaeologist, having worked previously for the Museum of London and in Germany for 4½ years. He joined PCA in 1996 and progressed from supervisor, to project manager and is currently a Post-excavation Manger. He has project managed large scale sites including the Royal Arsenal, Fulham Palace, the Salvation Army International Headquarters in the City of London and the Shippam’s site in Chichester. As post-excavation manager he is responsible for the production of client assessment reports and ultimately publication reports, including those for such major sites as the Shippam’s site in Chichester, Drapers’ Gardens and Caroone House, both in the City of London. He is the author of three Monographs and has numerous other publications behind him.


Märit Gaimster Ph.D FSA MIfA

Märit has been working for PCA since 1997, where she is currently the specialist of medieval and early modern metal and small finds. She is an established specialist in early medieval metalwork, with commissions including the exhibition “Weapons and Warriors” at the Sutton Hoo Visitor’s Centre, for The National Trust in 2002. More recently, Märit has been involved in assessing finds from the 18th-century enamel works at Battersea, 16th- and 17th-century dress accessories from the Inns of Court at Temple and medieval metalwork from the Thames waterfront. She has published articles in major national and international journals, with a contribution on ‘Image and Power’ for the new Oxford Handbook of Anglo-Saxon Archaeology currently in press.


Victoria Ridgeway BA (Hons)

Vicki’s archaeological career began in 1987 working until 1990 for the Museum of London’s DoGLA and then DUA, ultimately supervising several projects in the City. Vicki subsequently worked on various projects in Italy and Australia, as well as in Britain for a number of archaeological units. She joined PCA in 1995 supervising several sites, including major excavations at Hopton Street in Southwark, before joining the post-excavation team in 1999. Since 2004 she has been responsible for the management, editing and publication of PCA’s monograph series.
