Historic Buildings & Areas Department
Historic Conservation
Pre-Construct Archaeology’s Historic Buildings and Areas Department offers a range of services specially tailored to the needs of the statutory authorities, for instance English Heritage and Local Planning Authorities.
Understanding and defining the historic environment allows for better targeting of conservation and protection. We have considerable experience appraising, assessing, recording and interpreting the historic environment.
Among the services we offer are:
Conservation Area Appraisal
The heavy workload of Conservation Officers often prevents and delays the preparation of appraisals of both existing and proposed Conservation Areas. PCA has considerable expertise and experience in the rapid appraisal and characterisation of historic areas.
Area Assessments
In the case of area based regeneration projects and major infrastructure projects it is usually necessary to identify buildings, areas and landscapes of interest in order to develop strategies and measures for their protection.
Environmental Impact Assessments
Where proposals need to be assessed we define the historic environment and assess the impacts on it.
Landscape Assessments & Surveys
Including urban townscapes, parkland and rural landscapes.
Buildings Archaeology
Historic building recording of individual buildings and groups (assessments, detailed recording and publication) which includes:
Historic building materials analysis and dating (especially brickwork)
Recording for the design of conservation works to buildings
Recording and architectural analysis of building remains found by excavation
A fully integrated service offering archaeological evaluation and excavation, in tandem with building recording if necessary
Measured and photographic surveys.
Conservation Plans
Planning the long term management of historic buildings and areas requires a thorough understanding of the historic development and importance of the resource and its component parts and materials.
Architectural/Building History
Tracing the history of buildings, areas and their inhabitants through inspection and archival research.
