Desk-Based Assessments
Desk-based Assessments are usually commissioned by clients as part of their planning submissions or as part of an Environmental Assessment. They may also be commissioned as part of the information gathering process prior to land-purchase, and as such is a confidential client document. As part of a planning submission the objective of the Assessment is to provide the local planning with sufficient information upon which to consider the implications of development upon the buried archaeological resource. It should be possible to determine the site’s potential at this stage and whether a programme of field Evaluation will be necessary.
An Assessment will attempt to assimilate all readily available information pertaining the to the site’s archaeological and historical background. This information may be garnered from a variety of sources including the local Sites and Monuments Records, published and unpublished archaeological reports, cartographic sources, aerial photography, geotechnical reports, photographic and other illustrative material.
The Assessment will consider previous impacts at the site as well as those that are likely to be caused by the proposed development. The geology and topography will be looked at and relevant local and national policies will be referenced.
Having researched all relevant and obtainable sources it will consider the site’s archaeological potential period by period and will make recommendations as to whether further work is necessary.
