Evaluations
Planning Policy Guidance Note 16 (PPG 16) and the Institute of Field Archaeologists definitions refer to Evaluations as being limited in extent, and in practice may be non-invasive, invasive or a combination of both. PPG 16 also states an Evaluation is “normally a rapid and inexpensive operation, involving ground surveys and small-scale trial trenching.
An evaluation may involve non-intrusive techniques such as landscape survey or geophysical survey, but more usually requires a number of trenches to be excavated across the footprint of the proposed redevelopment. The archaeology within each is assessed, recorded and reported. The number and sizes of the trenches may vary from site to site but usually comprise between 4 and 10% of the footprint area. Pre-Construct Archaeology can discuss and negotiate the actual arrangements with the local planning authority on our client’s behalf.
The results of the Evaluation are used to advise the planning authority on the character, extent and importance of archaeological remains at a proposed development. As such it is crucial that developers can trust the ability and experience of the organisation undertaking this type of work. Pre-Construct Archaeology, as one of the largest contracting units in the country, have a demonstrable record of undertaking evaluations of all sizes and complexity. We are equally at home in the urban and the rural environments and in assessing material culture from the early prehistoric to the modern era. We present the results of the evaluation in a format which is clear and precise and from which an informed planning decision may be made. All reports are complimented with a range of graphics that enhance the value of it to the reader.
Given our size, capability and structure Pre-Construct Archaeology can react rapidly to our clients needs wherever in the country a development site may be. Previous work has been in geographically diverse locations as Berwick upon Tweed and the Isle of Wight, Kings Lynn and Newport, and even Belfast. We regularly work in London and the south eastern counties of England.
