Excavations

In PPG 16 archaeological excavations are referred to as ‘preservation by record’ (PPG 16 Section 25) and are undertaken in order to comply with local authority planning conditions,

Generally Excavations take place when a development of whatever scale threatens to destroy proven buried archaeological deposits. These works undoubtedly are the most expensive of archaeological interventions and potentially can be the most disruptive to a development programme. That is why the professional services offered by Pre-Construct Archaeology should be considered in all circumstances. When brought on board we consider ourselves to be part of the project team and will liaise with the client, their agents, architects, demolition contractors and groundworkers in order interface with professional colleagues in order to reduce our time on site. Whilst we strive to save time and money we also strive to maintain the highest professional standards. We do this because above all else archaeology is our calling but also because it reflects positively on our clients. When all of the writing, drawing and analysis is over the fruits of our collective labour will be a publication, be that in a PCA Monograph, Journal or magazine. The publication will reflect the time and money provided by the client and the expertise and professionalism of Pre-Construct Archaeology.

Excavation differs from evaluation as the requirement is more onerous. Whereas the evaluation is a sample of the development footprint excavations take place in areas where archaeology has proven to be both present and significant. It often requires all or most of the archaeological deposits to be fully hand excavated and recorded, leading to a comprehensive publication (see Post-Excavation sheet). Pre-Construct Archaeology have proved themselves across the country in their ability to undertake excavation projects of varying size and complexity, from the City of London to the Gwent Levels, from central Manchester to the gardens of Alnwick Castle we have successfully undertaken archaeological excavations.

If you think that your company or project would benefit by using Pre-Construct Archaeology’s proven professional team please contact us.
