Aberfeldy Estate Site D;
TQ 3874 8157; (Alistair Douglas); evaluation; 29 August-1 September 2000; East Thames Housing Group PLC; LEV00
The evaluation consisted of four trenches. A linear cut, possibly a natural channel, on a N-S orientation was recorded truncating the river gravels in the trench to the north of the site. A sequence of sand deposits, which may represent a period of rising water levels, overlay the N-S channel and were found across the site.
A band of dark brown peaty sand clay overlay earlier alluvial sands, probably laid down when river levels were falling and marsh conditions prevailed. Dumped deposits dating to the 19th century were observed covering earlier alluvial deposits with frequent fragments of CBM, coal, shell and charcoal. These were probably part of the land consolidation of Bromley Marshes in the19th century.
