Hillborough Caravan Park, Reculver Road, Reculver, Kent
TR 2060 6790; (Kevin Wooldridge); excavation; 3 January-7 February 2001; CgMs on behalf of Redrow Homes (South-East) Ltd; HCP 00

London Clay was exposed in both excavation areas (A & B), its surface (32.30-33.00m OD) sloped downwards towards the south and east.

A large number of surface finds were recorded in Area A. The majority of these lay on a thin silty loam deposit interpreted as a relic soil horizon. The finds included flint tools, burnt flint, prehistoric and later pottery and tile. The prehistoric material is believed to be largely in situ, but with later plough desturbance. The flints suggest a Mesolithic date.

Two roughly parallel NE-SW aligned ditches in Trench A produced Late Bronze Age material. Two contemporary pits were also recorded. Although the Bronze Age features were few in number they contained relatively large assemblages of pottery, including many sherds from individual vessels. They would seem to suggest deliberate placement rather than just the disposal of rubbish, and perhaps has a ritual connotation.

Two linear features on a similar alignment as the Bronze Age ditches were also revealed. They contained post or stakehole features suggesting that they probably functioned as possible palisaded ditches, fence lines or a similar type of boundary. Although their alignment may suggest some continuity in land use, the pottery recovered from these features suggest a late Iron Age date.

A pair of parallel ditches produced a single sherd of Late Iron Age pottery suggesting more activity in this later prehistoric period.
