Cleadon Waterworks, Cleadon Hill, South Shields
NZ 387 636; (Alan Telford); historical building survey; December 2002; CLN 02
The recording exercise involved:
- a search and synthesis of historic mapping and documentation relating to Cleadon Waterworks;
- an examination of the exteriors and interiors of the buildings, in order to identify any features of particular historical or architectural interest;
- photographic recording of the interiors and exteriors of the buildings, including details of any features of particular historical or architectural interest.
The principal findings of the recording exercise were as follows:
- The structures affected by the development were built concurrently as part of the original waterworks complex;
- Because the functions of the buildings changed little throughout their existence, there have been relatively few significant structural alterations. The key elements of the fabric of the buildings are all original, with minor alterations relating to changes in the plant used to power the works;
- Sufficient evidence of the original character of the buildings survives to allow a sympathetic conversion, which will preserve the visual amenity of the Conservation Area.
