Holy Cross/Wallsend Burn, Wallsend
NZ 3051 6712; (Alan Telford);watching brief; 9th-10th October 2002; HCC02
The recorded sequence comprised topsoil and very recent 'made ground' directly overlying glacial till. A single feature, a square cut filled with material of possible industrial origin, was recorded in section in the side of the cable trench at one location. No datable cultural material was recovered, but the feature can be provisionally interpreted as being of relatively recent origin.
The natural sub-stratum comprised brown-yellow or red-brown boulder clay, with localised light grey gleying. The average depth of the natural sub-stratum below the existing ground surface was c. 0.25m.
