South East Farm, Horsley
NZ 096 659; (Alan Telford); watching brief; 7th- 8th October 2002; HOR02
Phase 1 of the programme of archaeological monitoring demonstrated that construction of the existing farm buildings had heavily disturbed the site; no archaeological deposits or features pre-dating the current farm were recorded during the fieldwork.
The natural sub-stratum comprised weak, coarse-grained yellow sandstone, outcropping very close to the present ground level.
In the Phase 1 area investigated, no material or artefacts of archaeological significance were encountered. The evidence suggests that, prior to the construction of the existing farm buildings, the site was levelled by terracing into the bedrock at the top of the slope, and dumping the extracted stone towards the base of the slope. As a result of this truncation, any archaeologically significant material that may have existed would probably have been removed.
