Land at The Cedars, Barrow Hill, Sellindge
TR 1090 3765; (Alexis Haslam); evaluation; 23 - 25 October 2002; KBH02
Six trenches were investigated at the site. Natural brickearth and alluvium were observed at between 59.41m OD and 65.01m OD.
One possible palaeochannel or pond was observed to the NW of the site fairly close to the water channel associated with the East Stour river system, which bounded the northern and eastern edges of the site.
A series of 19th / 20th century dumped make-up layers were found towards the northern boundary of the site. These are interpreted as the attempt to reclaim the margin of the river valley when the Cedars was built.
