55 Lant Street
TQ 32251 79752; (Lorraine Darton); watching brief; 18 - 19 July and 14- 17 October 2002; LTW02

The works comprised the breaking out of the concrete slab and the grubbing out of concrete foundations to a level 3m below ground. Natural river terrace gravel was recorded at 0.5m OD.

A layer of made-ground was observed across the site with 18th century domestic rubbish and tanning waste in the form of horn cores.

A circular brick lined soakaway was recorded in the NE of the site. A masonry structure observed in section probably formed a N-S brick wall and ran through the centre of the site, dating to the 19th century.

A 20th century rubble deposit was observed across the site, representing a make-up layer beneath a concrete slab. The rubble deposit was recorded up to 1m thick beneath the concrete slab on the site.
