Westgate House and Norwich Union House, Westgate Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
NZ 2476 6405; (Jennifer Proctor); evaluation; July 22nd-August 2nd 2002; WGH02
Three evaluation trenches were investigated during the fieldwork, revealing remains of post-medieval and modern buildings, the construction of which had caused heavy disturbance throughout the area investigated.
In Trench 1, located in the alleyway between Westgate House and The Union Rooms public house, substantial concrete foundations associated with Westgate House were encountered. Trenches 2 and 3 were located in the paved courtyard to the north of Westgate House. The whole of Trench 2 was occupied by a modern cellar, infilled with demolition material. Although the full extent of the cellar was not established, it did not extend as far west as Trench 3, where a late 18th/early 19th century wall foundation and an extensive modern intrusion were recorded. Natural boulder clay was recorded in Trench 3 at a level of 31.98m AOD.
