Chesterford Park, Little Chesterford
TL 53380 42080 (Area A) TL 5340 41800 (area B); Barry Bishop; Evaluation; 13th - 23th May 2003; LCRP03
Six archaeological trenches were opened, three each in the areas A and B. Underlying geology consists of Cretaceous Chalk overlain by glacially derived Boulder Clay.
With the exception of a Post-Medieval field-drained system, the only features or deposits of archaeological significance consisted of a ditch that truncated an earlier, rather enigmatic feature, which may have represented a further ditch or large pit. The later feature produced both late medieval and Bronze Age / Iron Age pottery, indicating a probable late medieval date for the feature, medieval date for the feature. The Post-Medieval fled drainage ditch included an in situ ceramic field drain.
The only cultural feature recorded in Area B to the S of the site was a dry watercourse runs through the middle of area. Its sides appear to be very steep. Its fill included occasional fragments of ceramic and plastic field drain fragments. This remained unexcavated because of the probable recent date and the possibility of contamination from earlier agrochemical works.
