76 Stonegrove, Edgware
TQ 5817 1923; Stuart Holden; Evaluation and Watching Brief; 4-6 June 2003; SNG03
Four trenches were opened. Natural yellowish brown clay was exposed on the site in all excavated trenches at a maximum level of 67.03m OD.
The site is adjacent to the route of the major Roman road, Watling Street. The absence of any residual finds from the Roman period suggests that there was no activity on the site at this time. There appeared to have been extensive modern truncation on the site with no evidence to suggest any occupation prior to the 18th century. A single butt ended ditch containing predominantly 18th century pottery was recorded at the western corner of the site aligned north-south and measuring 1.08m wide and 0.58 deep. Also in the western corner of the site, a circular well 1.7m in diameter and 4m deep, built of shallow frogged brick was recorded and dated to the 19the century.
