Priory Farm, Bicknacre
TL 7865 0270; Chris Mayo; Evaluation; 29th - 31st January 2003; WOPB03
The evaluation consisted of five trenches. Natural gravelly brickearth was recorded at 48.11m OD.
An ovoid post-hole was excavated cutting the top of the natural which may date to late Medieval or early Post-Medieval periods. It contained several artefacts including pottery dating from 1480 to 1550, clay building material dating from the late Medieval - early Post-Medieval periods and a piece of worked stone, probably from the Priory structures. An iron object, possibly a blade, was also found. No structural evidence was seen of the Priory buildings or ancillary structures. This supports the historical analysis, which suggests that they were positioned to the N of the church.
A depression in the natural had been filled by a silt-clay-sand layer which yielded building material and a sherd of 18th-19th century pottery.
A modern layer of gravel beneath the topsoil may have been consolidating road surface for farm traffic.
