An archaeological monitoring and recording exercise undertaken on land at the rear of Crossways, Toll House Road, Durham, in advance of the construction of residential accommodation. The work was commissioned by Mark Reed Building Services as a condition of planning permission, following a recommendation by the Archaeology Officer at Durham County Council. The recommendation was made because of the possibility that archaeological remains associated with the battle of Neville's Cross, 1346, could be present on the site.
The archaeological investigations involved monitoring groundworks in two areas, Areas A and B. No finds, features or deposits of archaeological significance were encountered during the work. In Area A, topsoil was recorded overlying natural deposits. In Area B, a developed soil of probable post-medieval origin was recorded, overlain by topsoil.
