Digby Gardens Allotments, Dagenham, RM10
TQ 4921 8395; (Alexis Haslam); evaluation; 9 February - 13 February 2004; Higgins Ltd; DBG04

Five trenches dug across the site recorded natural Taplow gravels between 4.03m OD and 4.18m OD

In three trenches four linear features cut the natural gravels and were sealed by a layer of subsoil, which was in turn overlain by a deposit of modern topsoil. Only a few fragments of burnt flint were recovered from the features and therefore they could not be dated, although it is possible that they represent prehistoric agricultural activity in the form of field boundaries. The topsoil dates to the 20th century and was laid down around the time of the construction of the housing around Digby Gardens, at which point the site was turned into allotments.
