Butterfield Green, Luton
TL 1078 2491; (T. Carew); evaluation; 29 June 2004 - 7 July 2004; Easter Developments Limited; FBUT04
Natural clay with flints was recorded between 168.13 and 171.46m OD, reflecting the natural topography of the area, falling very gently from north to south.
The evaluation comprised 17 trenches covering the footprint of the proposed infrastructure road corridor onto land that has been in agricultural use. Cut into the top of the natural were seven ditches, two pits, and a gully, widely distributed across the site. The ditches shared some similarities and could be representing a field system. Two were aligned north west - south east, four north east - south west and one east - west. A small assemblage of worked flint characteristic of Mesolithic or Early Neolithic industries was recovered from the ditches. The pits and gully may have been associated with the probable field system. Both features and natural were sealed by subsoil overlaid by ploughsoil, from which worked flint was also recovered.
