Site of two proposed Fishing Ponds, Firthmoor, Darlington, County Durham
NZ 3121 1324; Emma Allen; watching brief; 27th - 28th October 2003; FMD 03

An archaeological monitoring and recording exercise was conducted on groundworks associated with the construction of the ponds. The watching brief was conducted as a planning condition, due to the archaeological potential of the site. Cropmarks within 280m of the development and artefactual evidence of prehistoric activity at Morton Palms to the east suggested that there was high potential for the survival of archaeological remains on the site. The investigations did not reveal any significant archaeological features. No evidence of human activity prior to the medieval period was encountered.
