Land South of Haughton Road, Darlington
NZ 2975 1500; Robin Taylor-Wilson; desk-based assessment and evaluation; 1st - 31st January; HAD 04
A desk-based assessment and field evaluation of the site was commissioned by Cundall Johnson and Partners as part of a planning application for the development of 'Darlington Learning Park'. The assessment judged the archaeological potential of the site as low to moderate, with low potential for Roman remains, low to moderate potential for Saxon remains, moderate potential for medieval remains and high potential for post-medieval remains. The assessment concluded that archaeological fieldwork, in the form of an evaluation, would be necessary to determine the extent nature and degree of preservation of any archaeological remains at the study site. The subsequent evaluation consisted of six trenches. Archaeological remains exposed included medieval and post-medieval agricultural features in the form of plough marks, ridge and furrow, a field drain, a bank, a path and a post hole. Post medieval archaeological remains included a bank or platform probably associated with the construction of railway sidings on the site in the first half of the twentieth century.
