A desk-based assessment of Middleton St George Primary School showed that the site of the school is immediately east of the putative line of a Roman road known as Cades Road. The assessment determined that excluding possible activity in the Roman period, activity on the site prior to 1911 was likely to have been agricultural. The assessment concluded that there was a high probability of Roman sub-surface remains surviving under the playing field, and a moderate possibility of sub-surface remains from other periods. Further archaeological work, in the form of a geophysical survey and an archaeological evaluation, was recommended. The subsequent evaluation on the site comprised a geophysical survey and nine trenches, none of which revealed evidence of any significant archaeological remains.
