Nos. 1&2 Newton Hall Farm Cottages, Newton Hall, Durham
NZ 27988 45021; Robin Taylor-Wilson; watching brief; 27th - 29th October and 3rd-5th November 2003; NHD 03
An archaeological monitoring and recording exercise was conducted on groundworks associated with the construction of extensions to the cottages. The work was commissioned by the developer, Mr. Stan Abbott. The watching brief was conducted as a planning condition, due to the potential for sub-surface survival of architectural remains. The cottages lie south-east of the site of Newton Hall, a post-medieval manor, redeveloped in the eighteenth century and demolished in the 1970s. Architectural remains relating to gate piers had been found in nearby gardens. No archaeological remains relating to Newton Hall were encountered during the watching brief, although the footings of No.1 Newton Hall Cottages were exposed, suggesting a late 18th / early 19th century origin for the cottages.
