Orpington Hospital Site. Area D1 & F. Orpington, BR6
TQ 4590 6482 and TQ 4578 6475; (Timothy Bradley); evaluation; 26 March - 31 March 2004; Barrath South London; OHS04
Natural sandy silty clay was recorded between 67.05m and 75.74m and interpreted as natural subsoil.
Two areas were excavated on the site of the former Hospital. Area D1 was situated in the central part of the western side of the site and area F was located at the south western corner. In Area D1 the natural subsoil was overlain by modern overburden. Severe truncation due to modern terracing was observed in the western end of the area. On the east and north side of area F1 the natural subsoil was overlain by modern levelling layers, whilst towards the south west it was overlaid by a probable garden soil. At the east end of the site an E-W orientated 19th century field boundary was recorded, and modern services and a concrete foundation base were also encountered. These were identified as being part of the late 19th century Boundary House built by Alfred Brown, a local benefactor.
