An archaeological monitoring and recording exercise was conducted at the theatre on groundworks in seven trenches associated with the refurbishment of the theatre. The watching brief was commissioned by Warwick Avenue architects, and conducted as a planning condition, due to the position of the theatre within the boundaries of the medieval village of Bishopwearmouth. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were encountered, possibly due to truncation associated with the original construction of the theatre in the early 20th century.
