Eastern Workshop, Shepperton Studios, Spelthorne
TQ 0683 6865; H. Clough and N. Hawkins; 5 February - 13 February 2004 and 28 July 2004; evaluation and watching brief; Pinewood-Shepperton Ltd; SHEP04
Natural gravel was recorded at 11.70m and 11.19m OD.
The evaluation comprised three trenches, all to the east of the proposed development site. The prehistoric period was represented by two drainage ditches of probable Bronze Age date and a palaeo-channel. Medieval agricultural features were recorded and a late 18th or early 19th century wall with unusual arched foundations was uncovered. Residual material included burnt and worked flint, abraded Roman pottery and a piece of Saxo-Norman unabraded pottery. The excavation of two geotechnical pits within the construction trench footings for the existing workshops was monitored during the watching brief. A sequence of modern made up ground, in turn sealed by concrete, overlain the natural gravel.
