The excavation of eighty-nine trial pits along the proposed route of the new road was monitored. In most of these trial pits topsoil was found overlying the natural Weald clay with the exception of thirteen pits where the natural clay was overlain by subsoil, in turn sealed by topsoil. Nine of the pits revealed possible Saxon, medieval and post-medieval features. Two of these features, small pits/post holes produced Early Saxon pottery. An NE/SW orientated ditch produced a sherd of medieval pottery. Late 18th and 19th century features comprised pits, postholes and a NW-SE brick and tile drain and were probably contemporary with a brick wall bounding the western perimeter of the site. Possible reworked agricultural or horticultural soil was recorded cut by the later features. Topsoil sealed the site.
