Three sites located on the periphery of Durham City - at Sniperley Farm, Carrville Interchange and Howlands Farm - were subject to a staged programme of archaeological investigations prior to their development for Park and Ride. The work was commissioned by Durham County Council.
An archaeological desk-based assessment of each site was undertaken prior to the fieldwork. This concluded that the potential for archaeological remains at the Sniperley Park site was low to moderate. At Carrville the potential for archaeological remains was considered to be low to moderate for all periods, apart from the post-medieval and industrial periods, where the potential was considered to be moderate to high. The Howlands Farm site exhibited the best potential for prehistoric or Romano-British and medieval remains, with the potential considered to be moderate to high, while for other periods the potential was considered to be low to moderate.
