London Office Site

Back

Fullwell Avenue, Barkingside, IG6
TQ 4393 9064; (R. Lythe;) evaluation; 8 August - 19 August 2005; Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick Ltd on behalf of Westbury Homes (South East); FLA05

Natural London Clay was recorded between 36.75m and 38.87m OD.

Twelve trenches arranged across the site identified four late 19th/early 20th-century field drains, a pit and a possible road surface. The fill of one of the ditches produced a large number of fragments of pottery all of which appeared to be from identical vessels. The assemblage included bases stamped with the inscription 'county asylum' and seems to indicate that the pottery was acquired from Claybury Hospital, situated to the northwest of the site, which functioned as a lunatic asylum from 1893 to the mid 20th century.
