A series of archaeological excavations were conducted at several
sites within Royal Clarence Yard. The investigations revealed a
sequence of well-consolidated natural deposits onto which multiple
buildings were constructed in the post-medieval period. The D1 site
was originally developed as a brewery in the early 17th century.
Brewing continued as the primary land usage of the area with related
ancillary buildings and offices appearing throughout the following
centuries. The D2/D3 phase of the site revealed a late 18th century
brewery and pumphouse feature that was used to draw water from a
nearby well for storage in a reservoir. A later, naval office building
in the D1 area was destroyed by fire as part of the incendiary bombing
raid by the Luftwaffe in the Second World War. The area had an office
built upon it in the 1960s that was demolished prior to the commencement
of the archaeological works. The Porter Store, formerly the Wyatt
Brewery was demolished in 1952. The pumphouse was demolished in
the 1970s.
