TQ 3735 6009 (Stuart Watson) Watching Brief 19th September and 27th
September 2007 Parochial Church Council of St Mary-The-Virgin Church
SFAR 07
The archaeological work consisted of monitoring and recording the
excavation of two service trenches linking to two new soakaways.
This was to provide improved rainwater drainage from the down pipes
of the church and formed part of a wider program repairs and restoration
to the external fabric of the church.
North-west of the Church, one drainage pipe trench was excavated
to a maximum depth of c.0.40m by c. 6.00m in length. This linked
up at its northern end with a new circular soakaway trench excavated
to a depth of c.2.00m. South-east of the church, a second trench
(Trench 2), was excavated to a depth of c. 0.40m by c. 7.00m in
length which linked up at its southern end with a new rectangular
soakaway trench excavated to a depth of c.1.60m.
The watching brief revealed no evidence of any burials or significant
archaeological features.
