South Terrace, Somerset House, Strand, Westminster;
TQ 3075 8075; (Ron Harris); Evaluation; 10 July-1 September 1995; Drivers Jonas on behalf of Property Holdings; SHU95
he South Terrace was remodelled as part of the Victoria Embankment construction
between 1864 and 1870. Two archaeological trenches were excavated at the east and west
ends of the terrace and these seemed to indicate different phases/styles of construction
of the brick vaults to the east and west below the terrace. The trenches revealed large
scale backfilling using Post-Medieval soil and rubble. Land drains exposed in both
trenches seem to have destroyed any evidence of the formal garden layout on the terrace
although flagstone fragments were uncovered and in the eastern trench a land drain seemed
to mirror a layout shown in an 1818 engraving by Stadler.
