Natural sand was recorded at 0.35m OD overlain by alluvially deposited clay-silt at up to 2m OD. During the 17th-18th century a number of ditches were cut, indicating an attempt to drain what would have been a wet marginal area. During the 18th century the area was reclaimed by means of considerable make-up material and walls, ditches and dumps indicate that domestic buildings were subsequently constructed on the site. Domestic activity continued on the site into the 19th century but by the end of the century the site was occupied by a warehouse built on substantial concrete footings, the latter severely truncating the archaeological deposits.
