Monitoring of observation pits and two boreholes revealed natural brickearth overlying sands and gravels. To the N of the site surviving archaeological deposits indicated Roman quarrying probably within a marshy environment. To the S of the site waterlain fills containing Roman, Saxon and possibly Medieval artefacts were interpreted as part of the probably Medieval City Ditch.
