Eynsham Drive/Harrow Manor Way, Abbey Wood;
TQ 4725 7955; (Jonathan Butler); watching brief; April 1999; PDSA; EYD99
Blue grey and light grey alluvium natural, perhaps representing two inundations was observed across the site. To the west of the site a 4.30m wide ditch, the base of which was filled with peat, was found aligned N-S and running parallel to Harrow Manor Way. Covering the ditch was a 1.00m thick deposit of brown alluvium apparently filling a hollow measuring at least 19.50m across.
This was covered by a modern dark grey brown silt deposit containing clinker and iron fragments, representing the remnants of the contaminated material mostly removed from site and replaced by sand.
