London Office Site

Back

London Road, Hackbridge (Beddington ZED);
TQ 2835 6643; (Mark Bagwell); evaluation; January 1999; Peabody Housing Trust; LRG99

Natural sand and gravel was observed at the base of trenches north of the site and at the base of all geotechnical test pits. Plough soil found across the site contained Prehistoric flint, Roman ceramic building material and Post-Medieval pottery and ceramic building material. The date range of materials suggests that the plough soil was formed during the Medieval and Post-Medieval periods. Six linear gullies across the site may represent Medieval to Post-Medieval field drains or ploughed down remnants of Medieval to Post-Medieval field systems. The numerous 19th century field drains and plough marks across the site probably represent the last agricultural land use for the site during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
