We were delighted to welcome Year 10 student Esme Seddon to Pre-Construct Archaeology for a week of work experience this July. Esme is interested in a future career in the editorial sector and spent the week with our publications team, learning about the work involved in preparing archaeological publications. It was a pleasure to have Esme with us, and we wish her all the best for the future.
Here’s what she had to say about her time at PCA:
With a future career ambition of working in the editorial sector, I was very pleased to be able to get a school work experience placement at Pre-Construct Archaeology. During my time with the company, I had the opportunity to learn how to compile bibliographic data using Zotero, an online open-source reference management system.
I learnt how to distinguish between the different types of publication produced and referenced in the archaeological industry and how important it was to have a reliable and efficient way of citing references. As I was inexperienced in archaeology it took some time to familiarise myself with the differences between journal articles, monographs, books and book sections.
To make sure that the references were both correct and complete I also had to carry out some independent research, both online and within the company’s library.
I really enjoyed my time at Pre-Construct Archaeology and feel I have learnt some very useful and transferable skills that will help me in my future career. I would like to thank the staff for taking the time to train me and for being so encouraging.
