This extremely rare Iron Age copper-alloy chain was found in a poor state of preservation across the neck of the crouched burial of a woman. The chain comprises approximately 53 penannular links, some of which appear larger in diameter, with a central larger circular link. It may be a necklace, although no parallels can be found. There is little evidence for similar, simple necklaces within Roman burials in Britain, though from amongst the cremation burials at Colchester Garrison, off Butt Road, Colchester, it was noted that in one cremation part of a copper-alloy chain (perhaps a necklace) was collected. The positioning of the chain is also reminiscent of chains strung between two brooches to hold clothing in place, as was evidenced in a burial in London where the brooches were connected by a necklace or chain made up of silver rings, glass beads and copper alloy fittings or links.
