Pre-Construct Archaeology led the excavation in West Norfolk that revealed an internationally significant Iron Age hoard.
The discovery includes rare components of Iron Age carnyces, dramatic animal-headed battle trumpets, alongside a boar-headed standard, shield bosses and other associated metalwork. Finds of this kind are exceptionally rare in Britain and across Europe.
Following discovery, the hoard was carefully lifted intact within a block of soil to preserve its archaeological context. Non-invasive imaging, including X-ray and CT scanning, has revealed the complexity of the assemblage prior to conservation.
Pre-Construct Archaeology is working closely with Historic England, Norfolk Museums Service and National Museums Scotland to support ongoing conservation and research.
We are extremely proud of the PCA field team, whose expertise and careful decision-making ensured the safe recovery of this remarkable discovery. PCA would also like to thank the staff at Addenbrookeโs Hospital for their assistance with the CT scanning of the hoard.
