Harry Platts will be returning to the LAMAS Conference on March 21 to present new findings from recent excavations along The Highway in Shadwell.

Carried out in 2024 and 2025, the work represents the first stage of investigations around 200m west of earlier PCA sites at Tobacco Dock and the former Babe Ruth Restaurant, where a late Roman settlement and bathhouse were discovered.

The latest excavations have revealed further evidence of late Roman activity, alongside the remains of 18th- and 19th-century housing. From these later phases, a rich assemblage of material reflecting Shadwell’s global connections through the nearby London Docks was recovered, linking the area to trade networks stretching from the Ottoman Empire to early colonial Australia.

Harry’s talk Imperial Suburbia: New Excavations on The Highway, Shadwell will explore how these discoveries add to our understanding of long-term occupation, urban development, and international trade in this part of East London.
